Getting to McCormick Place in Chicago

Chicago CTA Train Stop

McCormick Place is the world’s largest meeting and convention center, and our visitors are frequently in town for events at this South Loop venue. Fortunately, Chicago’s great public transportation system makes it easy to get there from almost anywhere in the city.

Those staying in north side neighborhoods can zip down on the CTA Red Line to the Cermak/ Chinatown stop, while those in west side neighborhoods can access it by taking the CTA Blue Line to the Red Line in the loop.

Below are more detailed recommendations, travel times, and estimated costs for getting to McCormick Place from various Chicago locations.

From Lakeview/ Wrigleyville

Getting to McCormick Place from the heart of Wrigleyville is easy whether driving or taking the “El”.

By Car: Take Irving Park Rd., Addison St., or Belmont Ave. to Lake Shore Drive. Turn south on Lake Shore Drive and zip down south, past the heart of downtown, and exit at Roosevelt Rd. to S. Indiana St, then turn left onto Cermak Rd and continue onto S Martin Luther King Dr. till you ar at McCormick Place.

At midday and after 7 pm, this drive will take roughly 20 minutes. During rush hour, this can be significantly backed up, so we advise you take the train if you plan on coming and going during peak commuting hours.

By Train: The CTA Red Line train runs through the heart of most of Wrigleyville and Lakeview, with stops at Sheridan Rd, Addison St., Belmont Ave., Fullerton Pkwy, and North. Pick the red line station nearest you, and take the train heading south to 95th street. You’ll get off at the Cermak/ Chinatown stop. From there, walk east roughly 5 blocks to McCormick place.

If you are closer to a CTA Brown Line station, you can easily take a brown line train and transfer to the CTA Red Line at Belmont Ave., Fullerton Pkwy, or in the Loop. Lakeview/ Wrigleyville Park Brown Line stations can be found at Montrose, Irving Park, Addison St., Paulina, Southport, Belmont Ave, and Wellington St..

Time:  25 - 40 minutes. Fee: $2.75 each way.

If you’d rather not walk those last five blocks, you can catch the 21 train on Cermak Rd. for a small transfer fee (.50).

From the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is close to Lake Shore Drive, making driving easy, but also fast via CTA.

By Car: Take Chicago Ave. east to Lake Shore Drive. Turn south on Lake Shore Drive and zip down south, past the heart of downtown, and exit at Roosevelt Road to S. Indiana St, then turn left onto Cermak Rd and continue onto S Martin Luther King Dr. till you ar at McCormick Place.

At midday and after 7 pm, this drive will take roughly 10  minutes. During rush hour, this can be significantly backed up, so we advise you take the train if you plan on coming and going during peak commuting hours.

By Train: The CTA Red Line train runs through the heart of most of the Gold Coast, with stops at Grand Ave., Chicago Ave, and Clark & Division. Pick the red line station nearest you, and take the train heading south to 95th street. You’ll get off at the Cermak/ Chinatown stop. From there, walk east roughly 5 blocks to McCormick place.

Time:  20 - 30 minutes. Fee: $2.75 each way.

If you’d rather not walk those last five blocks, you can catch the 21 train on Cermak Rd. for a small transfer fee (.50).

From Old Town

Old Town is a quick train ride to McCormick Place.

By Car: Head east on Fullerton Pkwy to Lake Shore Drive. Turn south on Lake Shore Drive and zip down south, past the heart of downtown, and exit at Roosevelt Road to S. Indiana St, then turn left onto Cermak Rd and continue onto S Martin Luther King Dr. till you ar at McCormick Place.

At midday and after 7 pm, this drive will take roughly 15 minutes. During rush hour, this can be significantly backed up, so we advise you take the train if you plan on coming and going during peak commuting hours.

If you are staying closer to I-94, you can take East 94 (which actually takes you south) to I-55. Take I-55 North (you’ll actually be going east) and take EXit 293D to Martin Luther King Dr.

By Train: The CTA Red Line train runs through the heart of most of the Old Town, with stops at North & Clybourn and Clark & Division. Pick the red line station nearest you, and take the train heading south to 95th street. You’ll get off at the Cermak/ Chinatown stop. From there, walk east roughly 5 blocks to McCormick place.

If you are closer to a CTA Brown Line station, you can easily take a brown line train and transfer to the CTA Red Line in the Loop. An Old Town Brown Line station can be found at Sedgwick.

Time:  20 - 30 minutes. Fee: $2.75 each way.

If you’d rather not walk those last five blocks, you can catch the 21 train on Cermak Rd. for a small transfer fee (.50).

From the Loop

Your best bet from the Loop is to take the train.

By Car: If you’re staying in the Loop, we recommend taking the train or a cab ($10 or less) if you don’t need your vehicle. If you must drive, you can take Wabash or Michigan Ave south to Cermak Rd., turn left on Cermak Rd, then continue onto S Martin Luther King Dr. till you are at McCormick Place.

At midday and after 7 pm, this drive will take roughly 10 minutes. During rush hour, this can be 20 minutes or more.

By Train: The CTA Red Line train runs through the Loop, with stops at State & Lake, Monroe, and in the South Loop at Harrison, and Roosevelt. Pick the red line station nearest you, and take the train heading south to 95th street. You’ll get off at the Cermak/ Chinatown stop. From there, walk east roughly 5 blocks to McCormick place.

Time:  5 - 10 minutes. Fee: $2.75 each way.

If you’d rather not walk those last five blocks, you can catch the 21 train on Cermak Rd. for a small transfer fee (.50).

From Lincoln Park

By Car: Take Fullerton Pkwy east to Lake Shore Drive. Turn south on Lake Shore Drive and zip down south, past the heart of downtown, and exit at Roosevelt Road to S. Indiana St, then turn left onto Cermak Rd and continue onto S Martin Luther King Dr. till you ar at McCormick Place.

At midday and after 7 pm, this drive will take roughly 15 minutes. During rush hour, this can be significantly backed up, so we advise you take the train if you plan on coming and going during peak commuting hours.

By Train: The CTA Red Line train runs through the heart of most of the Lincoln Park, with stops at Fullerton Pkwy and at North. Pick the red line station nearest you, and take the train heading south to 95th street. You’ll get off at the Cermak/ Chinatown stop. From there, walk east roughly 5 blocks to McCormick place.

If you are closer to a CTA Brown Line station, you can easily take a brown line train and transfer to the CTA Red Line at Belmont Ave, Fullerton Pkwy, or in the Loop.

Lincoln Park Brown Line stations can be found at Belmont Ave, Wellington St., Diversy Pkwy, Fullerton Pkwy, Armitage and Sedgwick.  

Time:  20 - 30 minutes. Fee: $2.75 each way.

From Wicker Park

By Car: Take Fullerton Pkwy or Milwaukee Ave. east to I-94 (the Kennedy Expressway) and take East 94 (you’ll actually be going south) to I-55. Take I-55 North (you’ll actually be going east) to Exit 293D to Martin Luther King Dr.

At midday and after 7 pm, this drive will take roughly 15 minutes. During rush hour, this can be significantly backed up, so we advise you take the train if you plan on coming and going during peak commuting hours.

By Train: The CTA Blue Line train runs right through Wicker Park, with stops at Western Ave., Damen Ave., and Division St.. Pick the Blue Line station nearest you, and take the train heading south/ east to Forest Park. You will transfer to the Green Line at Clark & Lake, and take that south to Cermak/ Chinatown.

You’ll get off at the Cermak/ Chinatown stop. From there, walk east roughly 5 blocks to McCormick place.

Time: 30 - 40 minutes. Fee: $2.75 each way.

From West Town/ West Loop

By Car: Take Lake Street east to I-94 (the Kennedy Expressway) and take East 94 (you’ll actually be going south) to I-55. Take I-55 North (you’ll actually be going east) to Exit 293D to Martin Luther King Dr.

At midday and after 7 pm, this drive will take roughly 15 minutes. During rush hour, this can be significantly backed up, so we advise you take the train if you plan on coming and going during peak commuting hours.

By Train: The CTA Green Line train runs through the West Town/ West Loop neighborhoods, with stops at Ashland Ave., Morgan St. and Clinton St.. Pick the Green Line station nearest you, and take the train heading east.

You’ll get off at the Cermak/ Chinatown stop. From there, walk east roughly 5 blocks to McCormick place.

Time: 20 - 30 minutes. Fee: $2.75 each way.
